The Importance of Racial Representation in Research Is Topic for August 16 Lunch & Learn

August 4, 2022 — Black and Brown participation in clinical trials is critical to ensuring better outcomes for all, and to providing cutting edge treatments that might save lives in underserved communities, according to Marieshia Hicks, project manager—Clinical Research Office for UT Southwestern. In a presentation titled “Black and Brown Participation in Clinical Trials: The Importance of Racial Representation in Research” Hicks will discuss the need for more participation by under-represented minority communities. The session, sponsored by the Zan Wesley Holmes Jr. Community Outreach Center, is from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 16 at Frazier House, 4600 Spring Avenue.

Although cancer clinical trial participation is low among all patients, this issue is particularly pronounced for under-represented minorities, with African Americans and Hispanic/Latinx individuals accounting for fewer than five percent of trial participants, says Hicks. The resulting non-representative trial accrual leaves important clinical questions unanswered and yields results that may not be broadly applicable to all patients. Black/African Americans have the highest mortality rate of any racial and ethnic group for all cancers combined and for most major cancers; and cancer is the leading cause of death among Hispanic individuals in the United States.

Marieshia Hicks, MHA is a Project Manager for both the Clinical Research Office (CRO) and the Office of Community Outreach, Engagement, and Equity (COEE) at UT Southwestern Medical Center’s Harold C. Simmons Comprehensive Cancer Center. Hicks has a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Fisk University and a Master of Health Administration from Virginia Commonwealth University. She is passionate about health equity and has championed several programs aimed at increasing the diversity of research faculty and participants. She is also a member of the American College of Healthcare Executives, and within UT Southwestern Medical Center, serves as Co-Chair of the Women & Allies Business Resources Group and committee member of the African American Employee Business Resource Group. As the “bridge” between the CRO and COEE, Hicks is responsible for the development, implementation and management of programs and initiatives that address diversity and equity in research at the UTSW Simmons Comprehensive Cancer Center.

ZWHJCOC Presents Session on How to Effectively Communicate with Traumatized Youth

August 4, 2022 — Parents, teachers, and coordinators of youth programs are invited to attend a back-to-school session on how to effectively communicate with traumatized youth. This session will engage participants in discussions about helping youth express themselves and will teach creative ways to work with youth who have been traumatized by a crisis or an unexpected event. The theme for the session is “Lost Kids: Painting with a Twist.” The session is from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 11, via Zoom and in person at Frazier House, 4600 Spring Ave.

What you will learn from the Lunch & Learn:

  1. How to effectively communicate with children who have been touched by life’s traumas and circumstances.

  2. Parents, teachers and youth program leaders will experience painting with a twist

  3. An opportunity to connect with an experienced vendor who can assist you through the process.

Presenters are Monica Johnson, founder and chief executive officer of Monica Johnson Enterprises, and Desree Robinson, CEO & founder of Lost Kids.

Johnson has a Master of Arts in Professional Counseling and a Master of Arts in Marriage and Family Therapist from Amberton University. She also has a Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting from the University of North Texas, an MBA, a Master of Business Administration from the University of Dallas, a Master of Arts in Theological Studies from Dallas Baptist University, and a Diversity and Inclusion for HR Certification from Cornell University.

Johnson has first-hand knowledge of the impact of unresolved childhood issues and family conflict, which was fueled by a culture of abandonment; she has taken all this education and experience from transforming companies and employees and is now using her gifts and life experience to invest in and change the lives of our most valuable resource, our youth, and women.

Robinson is a native of Dallas, born and raised in the Oak Cliff area. She is the middle child of three raised by a single mother. Desree will share her story of how art gave her the funnel to re-establish her self-worth and the value her purpose has on earth. Desree was once lost, and now she has found a life of gratitude and abundance to share with youth through M & M Beginners Art School.  M & M Arts is a time capsule of creativity, emotional healing, and resolutions through expressive color painting for The Lost Kids who cannot communicate, find rest, and have lost connection with their source of life.  She created Lost Kids in 2009 and bought it to life, she says, during the pandemic. Lost Kids is storytelling for children ages 5 and up who experience trauma at an early age. It delivers strength, resilience, and hope and leads to a pathway of overcoming fear and doubt.

BACKGROUND

The Lost Kids has seven characters representing different personalities and social and economic backgrounds. Each character delivers strength, resilience, and hope that leads to a pathway of overcoming fear and doubt and re-learns to trust, love, and live life as a happy kid.

Then plan to attend the upcoming Lunch & Learn session offered by the Zan Wesley Holmes Jr. Community Outreach Center to learn about the process of becoming an effective board member. Presenter Kristina Dove says that joining a board can be a consideration for many and as important as it is for an organization or company to have a governing board, it is just as important to choose active, strong members to run that board.  “The Importance of Cultivating a Strong, Active Board” will be presented at 11:30 a.m., Thursday, Sept. 23, at Frazier House, 4600 Spring Avenue.

This will be explored through voice, service, philanthropy, connections and leading from the "middle."

Kristina Dove is the founder and CEO of Community Power Consulting, a business which provides advising services and programs to nonprofit and educational organizations throughout Texas. She has served in a variety of nonprofit management roles during her career and has helped thousands of students through her work with the Dallas City of Learning initiative when she was the director of Learning Systems for Big Thought. She recently was named one of Dallas’ Top 40 Under 40 in Business, by the Dallas Business Journal.
